Question:

Can my child be searched at school?

Answer:

According to Maryland school law, a principal, assistant principal, or school security guard can search a student on school premises if they have a reasonable belief the student has something illegal. The search must be done in the presence of a third party. Police officers must follow their own search policies. School officials cannot search a student at a police officer’s request without a search warrant. Searches should be done to minimize disruptions and embarrassment to students.
