Question:

What’s the school’s responsibility during a suspension?

Answer:

According to Maryland school law, during a suspension, the school must provide the student with instruction similar to what they would receive in a regular classroom and allow them to participate with peers as appropriate. The student must be informed of the reasons for suspension before it takes effect, and the principal must notify the student’s parents in writing. After 10 days of in-school suspension, a conference involving the student, parents, and principal must be held. If a student is suspended for more than 10 days or expelled, the county superintendent needs to be informed, and an investigation will be conducted. If a student is not allowed to return to school after the 10th day, the superintendent must provide reasons for the delay and denial of reentry within 24 hours. If an extended suspension or expulsion is decided, the student or parent can appeal to the local board within 10 days.
