Question:

What are the school’s responsibilities during a suspension?

Answer:

According to Maryland school law, during a suspension, the school must provide the student with instruction similar to what they would receive in a regular classroom and allow them to participate with peers as appropriate. The student must be informed of the reasons for the suspension before it takes effect, and the principal must notify the student’s parents in writing. After 10 days of in-school suspension, a conference must be held with the student, parents or guardian, and principal. If the student is not allowed to return to school after the 10th day, the superintendent must provide reasons for the denial and notify the student and parents within 24 hours.
