Question:

When can the school use restraint on my child?

Answer:

According to Maryland school law, physical restraint can only be used in emergency situations to protect a student or others from imminent, serious, physical harm after other interventions have failed. Restraint can only be used by trained school personnel and must be removed as soon as the student is calm. Parents must be notified within 24 hours whenever restraint is used, and documentation of the restraint event must be kept in the student’s educational record.
