When is a Functional Behavior Assessment Required in School Discipline Law?
Question:
When is a functional behavior assessment required?
Answer:
A functional behavior assessment (FBA) must be conducted when a student’s behavior is impacting their education. It is required if the IEP team determines that the behavior is a manifestation of the student’s disability. Additionally, an FBA and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) may be ordered if restraint or seclusion is used for a student with a disability and it is not included in their IEP or behavior intervention plan.
