Question:

What are my child’s rights during a suspension?

Answer:

During a suspension, your child has the right to receive instruction similar to what they would get in a regular classroom and to participate with their peers as much as possible. Before an in-school suspension, your child must be told why they are being suspended and have a chance to respond. The school principal must inform you in writing about the suspension. If your child has 10 days of in-school suspension, there will be a meeting involving the student, parents, and principal. If your child is not allowed to return to school after the 10th day, you must be notified within 24 hours with reasons for the delay. If an extended suspension or expulsion is considered necessary, you have the right to appeal within 10 days. Your child may not return to school premises or participate in school activities while suspended or expelled.
