Maryland School Discipline Laws: Suspension and Expulsion Guidelines
Question:
Can my child get suspended for 10 days or more?
Answer:
Yes, in Maryland, a student can be suspended for more than 10 school days or even expelled at the request of a principal, unless specified otherwise in ยง 7- 305.1 of the regulations. If a suspension of more than 10 days or expulsion is considered, the principal must report it to the county superintendent, who will then investigate the matter thoroughly. If the student is not allowed to return to school after the 10th day, the superintendent must notify the student and parent within 24 hours with reasons for the delay. There is an appeal process available if an extended suspension or expulsion is deemed necessary.
