Question:

What should I do if my child is suspended for the first time?

Answer:

When a student in Maryland is suspended for the first time, they must be informed of the reasons for the suspension and given a chance to respond before it takes effect. The school principal has to notify the student’s parents in writing about the suspension. After 10 days of in-school suspension, the student, parents, and principal must have a meeting. If the student is not allowed to return to school after 10 days, the superintendent must provide reasons for the delay and denial of reentry within 24 hours. If an extended suspension or expulsion is considered necessary after a conference, the student or parents can appeal to the local board within 10 days.
