Question:

Is there a limit to how many times my child can be suspended?

Answer:

Under Maryland school law, a principal can suspend a student for more than 10 school days or expel the student, except as provided in specific cases. If a suspension of more than 10 days or expulsion is warranted, the principal must report it to the county superintendent, who will investigate. If after the investigation an extended suspension or expulsion is deemed necessary, the student or parent can appeal to the local board within 10 days. The process for suspension should be completed within 10 school days, and if a student is not allowed to return to school after the 10th day, the superintendent must provide reasons for the delay and denial of reentry.
