Question:

Can my child be suspended without a written notice?

Answer:

In Maryland, a student cannot receive an in-school suspension without being informed of the reasons for the suspension and having the opportunity to respond before it takes effect. The school principal must provide written notification of the in-school suspension to the student’s parents. After 10 days of cumulative in-school suspension, a conference must be held with the student, parents or guardian, and principal. This process must be completed within 10 school days of the initial suspension, unless there is a threat of serious harm to others.
