Question:

How does suspension affect my child’s education?

Answer:

Under Maryland school law, if your child is suspended, they should still receive educational instruction that is similar to what they would get in a regular classroom. The school must inform your child of the reasons for the suspension before it takes effect. After 10 days of in-school suspension, you, your child, and the principal should have a meeting. If your child has a disability, the discipline process must follow the rules of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The school should also provide intervention and support for your child’s behavior during and after a suspension.
