Question:

When can the school use seclusion on my child?

Answer:

According to Maryland school law, seclusion can only be used on a student if it is appropriate for their developmental level and behavior severity, does not restrict their ability to communicate distress, and does not exceed 30 minutes. School personnel must review the student’s medical history and obtain written consent from the parent before using seclusion. The seclusion room must be safe and provide adequate lighting, ventilation, and visibility for the student. Seclusion should only be used when less intrusive interventions have failed or are deemed inappropriate, in emergency situations to prevent serious harm, or if supported by the student’s behavior intervention plan.
