Understanding Extended Suspensions in Maryland School Law
Question:
What’s an extended suspension?
Answer:
In Maryland school law, an ‘extended suspension’ refers to excluding a student from their regular school program for a period between 11 and 45 school days. This can only happen if the superintendent or their designee determines that the student’s return to school would pose a serious threat of harm to others, or if the student’s behavior has severely disrupted the educational process and other interventions have been ineffective.
