Question:

How do I know if my child’s rights are being violated during suspension?

Answer:

If your child is suspended in Maryland, they should be informed of the reasons for the suspension and given a chance to respond before it takes effect. The school principal must provide written notification to you as the parent about the in-school suspension. After 10 days of in-school suspension, a meeting should be held with the student, parent/guardian, and principal. If the suspension process takes longer than 10 days, your child should be allowed to return to school unless there is a serious threat. If your child is not allowed to return, you should be notified within 24 hours with reasons. If an extended suspension or expulsion is considered, you have the right to appeal to the local board within 10 days of the decision.
